Window Tint for West University Drivers
A lot of what we see from West U is luxury family SUVs and first cars for teenage drivers. They live in alley garages with tight turns or on narrow streets under a heavy canopy, and the drive to us runs up Kirby or US-59.
Those two kinds of cars need different conversations. The SUV is about heat, UV and the kids in back. The first car is about staying legal and being able to see at night, because a new driver doesn't need a tint ticket or a hard time reading the mirrors at night.
What West U does to your glass and cabin
The first car. If your teenager is asking for dark tint, here's the line. Texas says the front doors can't go darker than 25%, measured through the film and the factory glass together. Go darker and it's ticketable, with a fine of up to $200, plus the cost of stripping it and doing it again.
Night driving. Very dark film makes it harder to see after dark, especially in the mirrors and when backing up. For a new driver, we suggest 35% or lighter up front, even though 25% is legal. The back can go darker, though very dark rear glass makes backing up at night harder too.
Inspection is gone, the meter isn't. Texas ended annual safety inspections for regular passenger cars on January 1, 2025, and the Harris County emissions check doesn't look at tint. Enforcement now happens at a traffic stop, where the officer's meter decides, with a 3% variance.
What it costs
Carbon starts at $300 on a sedan, ceramic at $400 and nano ceramic at $550. A family SUV has more glass than a sedan, so it prices higher. Carbon is a sensible budget pick for a first car. On the family SUV, ceramic is worth the step up. Send both cars through the free quote form if you're doing more than one, and we'll usually reply the same day.
The window tint page explains each film. The Houston tint cost guide has pricing, and the Texas tint law page spells out every limit.
Getting here from West U
We're at 5002 Navigation Blvd in EaDo, just east of downtown. From West U it's US-59 or Kirby, usually about 15 minutes outside rush hour. Most tint jobs take a few hours, so a morning drop-off is usually ready that afternoon. You'll get a firm timeline with your quote. Afterward, the windows stay up for three to five days while the film cures.
West U FAQ
My teenager wants limo tint. What can we legally do?
Limo on the back side windows is legal, and on the rear glass too if the car has outside mirrors on both sides. The front doors have to stay at 25% or lighter. That combination gives the dark look in back without the ticket.
Does tint help the kids in the back of the SUV?
Yes. Quality film blocks up to 99% of UV, and ceramic cuts the infrared heat that makes the back seat miserable. The back side windows can go as dark as you like, which also cuts glare for whoever is sitting there.
Can we see the shades before we pick?
Yes. Bring the car by and we'll hold real film against the glass, so you can compare 35% and 25% side by side before you commit. It's easier to agree on a shade when you're both looking at the same glass.
