The basics

What Is Paint Protection Film?

Paint protection film (PPF), often called a "clear bra," is a thick, optically clear self-healing urethane film applied directly over your factory paint. Unlike a wrap, it doesn't change your color — it forms an invisible, sacrificial layer that absorbs rock chips, road debris, minor scratches and swirls before they ever reach your clear coat, then heals light marks with a little warmth.

01

Urethane, not vinyl

A flexible, impact-absorbing topcoat over a durable urethane base — engineered to flex and disperse energy from impacts instead of chipping like paint does.

02

Self-healing

Light swirls and fine scratches in the topcoat "heal" and disappear with heat — sun exposure, warm water or a heat gun.

03

Nearly invisible

Properly installed film disappears into your paint — you get the protection without anyone noticing it's there.

Why people protect

The Benefits of PPF

Rock chip & road debris armor

The #1 reason people get PPF — highway speed throws gravel, sand and debris straight at your front end. Film absorbs the hit so your paint doesn't.

Preserves resale value

Factory paint underneath stays sealed and chip-free, which matters enormously on inspection for a trade-in, private sale or lease return.

Self-healing finish

Fine scratches and swirl marks disappear with warmth — no polishing required for minor marks.

UV & stain resistant

Modern film resists yellowing, and repels bug guts, bird droppings, tar and tree sap that etch bare clear coat.

Invisible protection

Gloss film is essentially undetectable — your paint looks exactly like paint, just armored.

PPF vs. Ceramic Coating vs. Vinyl Wrap

Three very different products people confuse constantly. Here's the honest breakdown.

Pro move

These three aren't competitors — they're a stack. Most builds run PPF on impact zones (front bumper, hood, mirrors) plus ceramic coating on top for gloss and hydrophobic ease-of-clean, and some layer a color-change wrap over or alongside it. Ask us about the full protection package.

Color + protection in one

Planning a color change anyway? If you want to change your color and protect your paint, Color PPF does both in a single self-healing film — instead of wrapping first and protecting after. See Color PPF →

Not just clear gloss

PPF Film Finishes

Modern PPF isn't limited to invisible gloss anymore. Here's the full menu of what's possible in top-tier film.

GlossInvisible, mirrors your paint
MatteFlat satin look, factory-matte-safe
SatinSoft in-between sheen
Gloss Black / ColoredTinted film over dark paint
Carbon / PrintedTextured or patterned film
StealthSlightly darkened gloss

Swatches are illustrative. We'll show you real film samples before you commit — most clients choose standard gloss so the film disappears entirely.

How much to cover

PPF Coverage Packages in Houston

PPF is sold by coverage, not "all or nothing." Tap a package to see exactly which panels the film protects — and where a seam shows. Every install done at our Houston, EaDo shop.

Classic bra

Clear Bra

The original, most affordable front kit — front bumper, the leading edge of the hood and mirror caps. Because the film stops partway up the hood, it leaves a faint seam line — the classic "bra line" — across the hood.

Entry point

Partial Front

A step up from the clear bra — full front bumper, more of the hood and the fenders, so the seam sits higher up and is far less visible.

Most popular

Full Front / Track Pack

Full hood, full fenders, front bumper, mirrors and A-pillars, with edges wrapped and tucked — complete, seamless nose-to-cowl protection against rock chips, bugs and road debris.

Max protection

Full Body

Every painted panel wrapped in film — total protection, ideal for exotics, collector cars and anyone keeping a vehicle long-term or maximizing resale.

Add-ons

High-Impact Add-Ons

Mirrors, door cups & handles, rocker panels, rear bumper, headlights and door edges — small zones that take disproportionate daily wear.

Glass armor

Windshield

Optically-clear film laid over the windshield — it takes the rock-chip and crack hits so your glass doesn’t. Self-healing, sensor- and HUD-safe, and a fraction of the cost of a windshield replacement.

Light protection

Headlights

Clear PPF over the headlights — shields the lenses from chips, sandblasting and UV yellowing, and locks in a fresh restoration for years.

Craftsmanship

The Install Process

A great PPF install is invisible — you should never be able to tell where the film starts or stops. Here's exactly how we do it.

1

Deep Decontamination

pH-neutral hand wash, clay bar, iron remover and a full panel wipe-down. Any dust or contaminant trapped under film becomes a permanent flaw.

2

Computer-Cut Precision Patterns

Film is cut to your exact vehicle's pattern library — panel-specific templates, not hand-trimmed guesswork, for clean factory-line edges.

3

Wrapped Edges & Tuck

Where possible, edges are wrapped around body lines and tucked rather than cut on top of the panel — the difference between a seam you can feel and one you can't.

4

Slip Solution & Squeegee

Film is positioned wet, then worked down with precision squeegees to push out every last bit of solution and trapped air.

5

Heat-Form & Seal Edges

Heat relaxes the film into curves and recessed panel lines, then every edge is sealed down so it won't lift or catch a fingernail.

6

Cure & QC

Film needs a short cure before a wash or hard rain. We inspect every panel with you before you drive off. Most packages run 1–3 days depending on coverage.

Straight talk

What Does PPF Cost?

Full front from$1,300

Every quote is custom — your exact price depends on a few things. Partial-front packages start lower; full-body coverage on a larger vehicle runs significantly more.

Coverage chosen

Partial front vs. full front vs. full body — more panels, more film and labor hours.

Vehicle size

Sedan vs. SUV vs. truck — larger panels take more film and more precision time.

Film tier

Standard gloss vs. matte/colored/self-healing-plus film tiers price differently.

Panel complexity

Deep curves, complex body lines and add-on zones (mirrors, rockers) add install time.

Longevity

How Long Does PPF Last?

Top-tier PPF is rated for 5–10 years of protection, depending on the film and how the car is kept. What actually determines lifespan:

Film quality

Premium, top-tier PPF vastly outlasts budget film — better clarity retention, less yellowing, stronger self-healing over time.

Sun & heat

Houston's UV load is real, but quality film is engineered for it — expect the longer end of the range with regular care.

Care habits

Prompt removal of bugs, tar and bird droppings, plus gentle washing, keeps film clear and extends its working life.

Our warranty

Every Spec'd Studios PPF installation is backed by a 1-year workmanship warranty. On top of that, premium/top-tier film carries its own manufacturer material warranty of up to 10 years against yellowing, cracking and delamination — we'll confirm the exact coverage for the film tier you choose.

Keep it flawless

PPF Aftercare, Simplified

48h

Wait to wash

Give freshly installed film about 48 hours to fully set before its first wash.

Hand wash preferred

Touchless or hand wash is safest — skip aggressive brush washes on new film.

Remove stains fast

Bug guts, tar and bird droppings should come off promptly, before they can etch or stain the film.

Heat activates healing

Warm water or direct sun helps light swirls in the film self-heal — no polishing needed.

The exit plan

Removal & Re-Application

Done right, removal is clean and paint-safe: gentle, even heat softens the adhesive, then the film lifts in full sheets and any residue lifts with adhesive remover. On healthy factory paint, quality film removes without damage — and because it was protecting your clear coat the whole time, the paint underneath is often in better shape than the rest of the car.

Why premium film matters

Budget film left in Houston sun for years can yellow, harden and become brittle — making removal slow and residue-prone. Premium/top-tier film is engineered to stay flexible and peel cleanly even after years of service, which is exactly why it's worth the difference in cost.

Paint Protection Film FAQ

What is paint protection film?+

PPF (a "clear bra") is a thick, optically clear, self-healing urethane film applied over your factory paint. It absorbs rock chips, road debris and minor scratches before they reach your clear coat, and light marks in the film itself heal with warmth.

Is PPF worth it?+

For most drivers who put real highway miles on a car, yes — it's the only product that physically stops rock chips, and it protects resale value by keeping factory paint chip-free. It's especially popular on new vehicles, leased vehicles and front-facing panels.

How long does PPF last?+

Top-tier film is rated for 5–10 years, depending on the film tier, sun exposure and care habits. Manufacturer material warranties on premium film often run up to 10 years.

How much does PPF cost in Houston?+

At Spec'd Studios, full front coverage starts from $1,300. Final pricing depends on coverage chosen (partial front, full front, or full body), vehicle size and film tier. Get a free custom quote.

PPF vs. ceramic coating — do I need both?+

They do different jobs. PPF is physical impact protection against chips and scratches; ceramic coating is a hydrophobic sealant for gloss and easier cleaning. Most builds run both — ceramic coating over PPF gives you protection and shine together.

Does PPF really self-heal?+

Yes — light swirls and fine scratches in the film's topcoat relax and disappear with heat, whether that's direct sun, warm water or a heat gun. It won't heal a deep cut through the film, but it handles the everyday marks.

Will PPF turn yellow?+

Premium, top-tier film is engineered to resist yellowing for its full rated lifespan. Yellowing is mostly a budget-film problem — another reason film quality matters more than sticker price.

Can PPF be removed later?+

Yes. With gentle heat, quality film lifts cleanly in full sheets from healthy factory paint, and any leftover adhesive comes off with remover — usually leaving the paint underneath in excellent shape.

How long does installation take?+

Most packages run 1–3 days depending on coverage — partial front is fastest, full body takes longest. We'll give you an exact timeline with your quote.

Do I need PPF on a brand-new car?+

It's actually the ideal time — factory paint is in its best possible condition, and PPF locks that in before the first highway trip introduces the first chip.
